OBERON SILVER CUP - Quick Recap

"Ignorance can be cured, Stupidity cannot"
-- that sums up my games last Sunday at the Oberon Silver cup :D

Without any preparation except fixing all of the broken models that I have I went and played at the Oberon Silver Cup on the weekend. I had spent the week before repairing everything that I could and looking for all missing models that I could.

TRIUMVIRATE WARS: Recap and Tourney

After much of the drama on the local forums it was time to forget all of it and just come out and play for the Triumvirate Wars. Now the Tourney was a bit different because there was 3 players per team with one player sitting out one of the 3 matches and no combination of 2 players will ever occur again.

The not playing in one game was not my liking but with 6th ed not being a fast paced game anymore, with me being able to rest on the 2nd game and I play horde lists well I guess it was still okay :P.

My team mates for the Green Team (for want of a team name) where Space Marine Obi and Chaos Space Marine Joel :D with my Green Tide of Orks forming the third man.

So how did we fare?

GOLD CUP TOURNAMENT - 2013

Have not have had a chance to play much these first few months because I was out of the country but I managed to make up for it by getting some practice games in and competing in the RHGC (Rolling Hills Gaming Club) Gold tournament, where as a way to push the hobby -- everything on the table had to be painted.

Having had the lazy streak for the past decade in finishing an army it was tough going in where you MUST be painted. Fortunately I skipped around this by actually finishing of and playing with a Painted army in the previous year's GT event

I was at least able to paint the bases of my grot krew with the same paint style as the rest of the Ork army so  in I went.

GT 2012: TOURNAMENT REPORT

Note: Talk about a very very late post.. better posted than nothing though :D

Well with a bit of reusing some models, completing a couple and then having the wife finish of a vehicle or two I actually managed to have a fully painted 1500 army and brought it to a GT !!!. Wohoo. Finally. :D

So with the wife's permission I managed to bring the army and play it at Centris where I managed to get 5 games in with most of my games being on time :D. This was unusual because I play a horde army and yet still finished the games I had within the time limit by doing the following :

1) Reduce deployment time -- this was accomplished by ensuring that each unit was individually split from each other

2) Fewer units but Bigger unit size -- usually I would have 3 medium (20 actually per squad) mob of boyz. To minimize the time i would have to move individual squads (like figuring out where they would need to go).. I decided to just go and use Two big Units of 26 boyz each and be done with it.

3) Avoid close combat at all. Rolling for ork close combat can be both great and dissapointing at the same time. Soo much dice can be rolled with bad results. So I will only assault something if it is down to 4 models or less and I just need to finish it off. Will not go after bigger sized units and instead will just shoot shoot and shoot.

KICKSTARTER LEAGUE 2012 - 1500 points

I had signed up for the Kickstarter League last September which was going to be a 7 week thing and you had to finish 7 games. This league had been created to encourage players to get their GT armies ready as well for everyone to get the hang of 6th ed 40k gaming.

With that in mind I joined the league with the following list:

Ork with IG allies:

Big Mek.. - W/ Burna, Heavy Armor. KFF - 110 points
WeirdBoy - w/ Warp Head upgrade - 85 points

Ork Boyz - 21 w/ Nob - eavy armour, pklaw, 2 big shootas = 176 pts
Ork Boyz - 21 w/ Nob - eavy armour, pklaw, 2 big shootas = 176 pts
Ork Boyz - 21 w/ Nob - eavy armour, big choppa and big shoota = 151 pts

DakkaJet - w/ extra supashoota - 120 points

Big Gunz - 3 kannons - 60 pts
                                                          Sub total - 878 pts..

Imperial Guard detachment

Company Command Squad
- Chimera, Las cannon weapon team, Astropath

Guardsman Marbo - 65 points

Scout Sentinels x2 - AC. Searchlights - 82

Infantry Platoon - 160pts
PCS with / AC
infantry squad w/ AC
infantry squad w/ AC

Manticore - 160pts

                                                     Sub total - 622pts.

With that in mind I have managed to acquire and partially assemble a Manticore (wanted to base coat and finish painting the body before I attach the missile assembly really.

I still need to create a Marbo model though. Aside from that most of the other models are assembled and just need for me to finish painting them all.. I had planned to finish all of this before October hit unfortunately something else came along the way ... it had an 8 pointed star...

Let's see if I manage to finish anything or Chaos pulls me to it.

BATTLE BROTHERS 2012

Me and fellow grot Obi during first week of September once again in the annual Battle Brothers tournament this time held in ATC. Unlike our last list from last year where we both used Orks I thought with the advent of 6th ed that we we would use an allied Ork , IG force. Both units that would probably be appearing in a lot of other armies as allies.. :P

We arrived early for the day of the tournament .. and as always we were too early :P

Anyway on to the games !!!!

Game 1 - Vs Lord Krakentooth and Ravenkruss
- Deployment: Dawn of War
- Mission : Scouring

How did it go:

The supposed grudge match !!!. Too bad it looks like it was all hype :P. Anyway we deployed in a line facing the awesome chimera firepower army and Nurgle support. The trick was to keep shooting the ones holding the objectives with Barrage weapons while the Orks moved midfield.

The Ork meat shield was being shot to pieces by the combined shooting of the Chimeras but we held on and kept moving forward. The Plague Marines in Rhino that was going for both of our flanks got shot to pieces but one was able to destroy the Pink Basilisk on the Right.

Marbo upon entering whiffed and never even got to touch the Colossus that he threw the demo charge at. The Nurgle Daemon Prince got shot by las gun fire and actually died to a squad sgt in close combat. The scout sentinel finally made it by turn 2 and managed to wreck a chimera when it got in.

Unfortunately time was called on the game (by turn 3 I think!!!)  and we never even got to use the DakkaJet :(.

Still we managed to cause enough casualties that we managed to gain more objectives and get the win !!!

Game 2 - Vs Furyan and Mark
 - Deployment : Hammer and Anvil
 - Mission : Relic

How did it go:

Dark Eldar - ignores Night Fight.. great.. Still the short edge deployment made it sure that we had the range advantage against them. After we mostly survived the Dark Eldar and Eldar shooting (mostly because we had a lot of bodies to spare) we proceeded to shoot them to kingdom come as well. Imperial Guard Vehicles had the range to do it too.

Managed to wreck a few Venoms as well as their Ravagers and  cut much of their firepower in half.. Marbo and the Desperadoes got shredded though.. at least Marbo killed a few Warwalkers with it's Demo charge.

The Ork DakkaJet came in. we declared WAAGH and tried it's best to shoot at the Seer Council in Jetbikes. With there ability to reroll armor save though all of that WAGGH dakka just made two bikes die really.

Unfortunately they managed to take the Relic and hitail it to a ruin (which soured me a bit...but never mind) where they tried to hide as much as they could. The Warp spiders came in and the Jetbikes turbo boosted all the way to the Loota Lines.

Sadly once again time was called before we could do some heavy duty counter-attacking. With them having the Relic it was a lose for us.

Game 3 Vs. Emcee and Pat Chua
- Deployment: Vanguard
- Mission:

How did it go:

This was us basically trying to shoot shoot shoot the 40 GK Terminators that were going after us and they constantly making their saves. A few units were in close combat with the GK terminators but we managed to survive the incoming Terminators but the full force was slowly walking forward.

Fortunately Marbo came in on the board and managed to throw his demo charge to get rid of some GK on their objective and managed to contest it. Also the scout sentinels managed to kill their Warlord and then the Desperadoes managed to get the objective on their corner for us to win the game !!!

Conclusion

Well we managed to have 2 Wins and 1 Lose. Not such a bad turn out though I think we could have gotten it all if we had enough time to wipe out the Eldar players in game 2. Still it was a great tournament.. hope to be able to do it again..

40k LEAGUE Kill Team Games 1 to 3

Well my plan to finally finish painting the Kill Team that I have prior to starting the 2012 LEAGUE has been met with resistance.. Noticeably the 12-13 hour work days with a busy weekend ruining my chances to try to paint and finish my boyz. (Well that's my excuse anyway)

TOURNAMENT: 40K GT 2011

Exactly after the 1111 tournament at the bunker was the Grand Tournament 2011 sponsored by Neutral Grounds Philippines and held at the Xavier Toy Fair in Green Hills last November 12-13, 2011

So a Warhammer 40k tournament with cosplay and Transformers in the background.. huzzah.

Unlike other countries tournaments never really have any comp scores over here. We may do the occassional weird tournaments (like 1111) but we never think that anything should not be allowed in the game.

TOURNAMENT: (sorta) 1,111 Tourney

Well last November 11 was the third year anniversary for the Bunker and unfortunately with the building being sold off to the nearby hospital this year would be its last. To celebrate there would be a 11-11-11 tournament to be played. We had to play a 1,111 point army list and any player that had a 111 point unit would get bonus points.

MANILA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - Crap what flavor of SM to use?

Barely a week to go for the Manila Team Championships and I still do not have a list ready to use by then.. Arrggh,,,

Hindered by my lack of list building I decided to try to do this in reverse. I would get all of the models that I have had assembled, display them and then think if I can get to use them ...

the more or less assembled stuff

TOURNAMENT : MANILA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS -- me Captain?

Well this has come as a surprise.. well not really more of like I think I forgot about the event because of work :P. Following the theme for ETC and as to cram as much tournaments as we can before the BUNKER closes we have that scheduled this coming October 22, 2011.

There would be 4 players per team and we have to use different codexes. That got me off the loop as I had been playing nothing but orks for the past 2 years. That means I have to dust off my SM and start creating a 1750 list , assemble whatever models I still need to get it done, and NOT be able to play test it before the game tournament start.

BATTLE BROTHERS 2011

My friend and I managed to have a good time in the 2 on 2 tournament that was Battle Brothers 2011 once again hosted by Lito at the Bunker. Much fun and much loudness as well as rubbing of butt cheeks (you have to be there to figure that out) ensued.

Though I have issues with the Missions (specially with Mission 1 - I mean its a doubles tournament - why do you have one mission where the other player just sits down?) and the fact that we did not have time to finish the 2nd game... it was an OK tournament for us.. with us ending in at 5th place..

I have at least managed to convince Obi how tough Ghaz can be and I on the other hand have seen more possibilities for the Ork Warboss on Bike..

I have however gotten sick and tired of not finishing an army and just the odds and ends.. It's time to at least paint a batch of models at one color at a time again. Will see how this goes.

GLADIATOR WH40K - 2011: Intro and Recaps of Game 1 to 3

Introduction

Well the start of 2011 was a blast as I once again participated in the Gladiator Cup, a 7 week series of games with oddball scenarios that would eventually lead up to the top 2 of each area battling it out in a win-all type of gaming.

As was reported before in my last year's Glad up starting here, I managed to do all right in the Southern Sector with my Green skins. With my work throwing me far north of where I lived the best place for me to get some games in was to be at the bunker.

I decided to tweak last year's list and came up with the following. Sadly I screwed up my understanding of some of my army lists as we shall see.

My list was the following:

Shadows of the Warp and Painting connundrum

The Shadows of the WARP campaign closed last October.. had finished 2 more games with one opponent being Tyranids and the last one against Dark Eldar.

I was able to wipe out the Tyranid player but got a draw with the Dark Eldar. I was actually in the running to win after the 3rd game but i don't mind losing to the DE (still using the old 3rd ed codex). My only gripe really was that I had to wait for 2 hours for him to show up and the wife was getting pissed because I was going to be late.

After reviewing it I agree with another players assesment. I did not want to get a bye from the game since that would have made me auto win the league (Winning on a bye on the last round just makes me feel dirty inside) But at least I should have fought the 5th person that was in the running so I can get that critical game in oh well thats that.

In Painting News...

After that event my planned painting run puttered out.. Since I don't like having to pay for painting I have done the next best thing and have my wife paint some of the army while she's at home to avoid her being bored :D

I get to play and field a painted army.. what a win win :)

500 Point League /Tournament at the Bunker

The Rolling Hills Gaming Club will be holding a 500 point tournaent/league every Tuesday of September all the way to October starting on the 14th. This will give a chance for the new blood to start getting used to the gaming and fighting the "veterans"

This also gives me a chance to be able to start painting a slew more orks that I still have NOT yet painted (hey what else is new) . I just need to create myself an armylist and from there start gathering the models, and then base and paint them all (most of them are probably assembled already - just a matter of finding them)

I will not use any of the existing models that I have painted (the few and far between ones) so that I get to force myself to paint some new stuff.. Now all I need is to get army builder up and running (or else heaven forbid I result to pen and papper *shudder) ... Still time is running out.. Will see :)

WHFB: 1999 point Orc 2008 GT army

Finally after much headache in computing and recomputing my army list I have come up with the final version (or so I hope) of the army list that I would be using for the 2008 Fantasy GT to be done in April.

The thing about this kind of army is the relative cheapness of the units as compared to say High Elves. I can take out an option here and an option there and I can save enough points to get another unit of boyz or several more support units which made the choices so hard to finalize.

Bruzza's Horde (1999 points)

Characters - 578 points ( 29% of armylist )

  • Bruzza da Big - Orc WarBoss - Light Armour, Boar, Ulag's Akrit Axe, Enchanted Shield, Warboss um's Best Boss At - 217 points
  • UrkFang Dwarfeater - Black Orc Bigboss - Heavy Armour, Boar, Battle Standard Bearer, Mork's Spirit Totem - 180 points
  • RotGit - Goblin Bigboss - Light Armour, Shield, Wolf, Wollopa's One Hit Wonder, Guzzla's Battle Brew - 81 points
  • Shimwit - Level 1 Night Goblin Shaman - Dispel Scrolls (x2) - 100 points

Core: - 996 points ( 50% of armylist )

  • 25 Orc Boyz - Full Command, choppa, shield - 180 points
  • 25 Orc Boyz - Full Command, choppa, shield - 180 points
  • 25 Orc Boyz - Full Command, extra choppa - 205 points
  • 20 Night Goblins - Musician, bows, Fanatic (x1) - 89 points
  • 20 Night Goblins - Musician, bows, Fanatic (x1) - 89 points
  • 5 Wolf Riders - Musician, spears - 71 points
  • 5 Wolf Riders - Musician, spears - 71 points
  • 5 Spider Riders - Musician, spears, shields - 71 points
  • 2 Snotlings - 40 points

Special: 220 points ( 11% of armylist )

  • Wolf Chariot - 60 points
  • Wolf Chariot - 60 points
  • Spear Chukka - 35 points
  • Spear Chukka - 35 points
  • Night Goblin Squig Herd - 30 points

Rare: 205 points

  • Magog - Giant - 205 points (10% of armylist)

This list is shy of 2000 points total. Ive got some tried and tested units as well as a few new ones that I wanted to try out. Normally having to use new units can be tricky, specially if its a tournament setting. However I just want to give them a go this year and with me not expecting anything I just plan to have a great time.

Most of these models are already done but definitely need some retouching and varnishing while others are still on their sprues. This is fine by me since the new units that I had selected only have a few models in them so that it wouldnt give me a headeache in just finishing them. All of the characters need to be assembled and created. The Orc Boyz regiments need some retouching and painting of a few extra models. The Night goblins have bows simply because I have painted them that way and I loathe to have to modify them to have hand weapons and shields. Still if I have the time ...

I plan to do the assembly of any new models first then go ahead and do retouches and then actual painting. After everything has been painted will i apply matt varnish on all of the models.

TOURNAMENT: 1K ROE Tournament Results

Finally returned to Robinson's Galleria for the 1K tournament for Warhammer 40k. Ironic since my new office is just 4 four blocks away. Unfortunately on the day of the tournament I had been out of town and totally without sleep. Still I promised I'd show up and there I went, sipping Gatorade and 2 packs of Extra joss.

So how did I fare? Well read on:

(Games were all using Rules of Engagement)

Game 1.

Opponent: Ian "Beefcake"
Army: Chaos Space Marine - (Khorne)
Result: Draw
What Happened:
16 Khorne Berzerkers in a squad is just plain nasty. Wittled one squad down to shooting and an unsupported charge by a mutant mob before my shooting units got overwhelmed by his Daemon prince and second Khorne squad.

Managed to eck out a draw when I used my second mutant mob to take one of his counters though it came close when his Khorne squad charged the Leman Russ I stupidly moved forward and almost made it into close combat.

Game 2.

Opponent: Jun Ubay
Army: Tau
Result: Draw
What Happened:

The lack of sleep was starting to take it's toll on my condition. My opponent seeing this (and because he hadn't had lunch) told me that if ever we get to fight that let's just get a draw and go find some grub. By luck would have it we indeed were matched up against each other and shook hands and declared it a draw as we went to look for grub and to the supermarket to get some Gatorade and Xtra Joss.

Game 3.

Opponent: JP "Shrumster"
Army: Imperial Guard
Result: Draw
What Happened:

The bunched up Guardsmen made a good target for the Russ's Battlecannon. My mutant mobs raced towards his lines but I decided to divert them to charge the enemy Sentinels so that I would be safe from enemy shooting and to take them all out. Unfortunately one mob got stuck the entire game trying to down 2 sentinels ( I already had 2 power fists and still it didn't go down until the last turn.

This left the game in the balance on the last turn as I had one mob on his counter and my Spawn on mine. His shooting couldn't destroy the mutant mob boss and Aspiring champion until his BattleCannon got right on target. My spawn weathered Lasgun, Plasma and Missile Fire to remain on my counter.

Good Draw game all around.

Opponent: Dick "Timberwolf"
Army: Space Wolves
Result: Minor Victory
What Happened:
I had good positioning on the counters while had the same. He unfortunately exposed his Vindicator to a Lascannon Marine denying him his protection there as it exploded due to a side hit. This allowed my Mutant mob to contest his counter for the win while my other mob did a diversionary attack on his lines

Conclusion:
There was no Game 5 for me as the effects of Gatorade and Xtra Joss started to wear off. All in all not a bad three games for me. I wonder how would I have fared if I actually got some rest. Ahh will never know :)

(for more details of the action go to the RHGC Blogspot website which can be found
here )
